As we reflect on 2007, it’s been all about faith and opportunity. While many of our fellow Memphians are homeless or fighting for survival week-to-week on less than minimum wages, we’ve been able to offer hope. According to the last Census, a staggering 34,000 people in the City of Memphis are unemployed. Most are unaware of how to access the job market, and others jump from job to job.

Through our Jobs in Community (JIC) program, participants learn that a job does not equal a career. The JIC training helps those stuck in the unemployment cycle to establish a career that they can be proud of and matches them with employers in need of quality employees.

So far this year, we have trained 86 in our hospitality, carpentry and plumbing programs. Of those individuals, 65 are gainfully employed, and we continue to assist the others in their job search.

… this program gives you more than just an avenue to seek gainful employment,
it also gives one awareness and insight on how to better your life and better deal with people and the world around you.” — Terry Robinson

“This program has helped me recognize that as a person I have worth and that I am of value. The last couple of years have been a struggle. I have been in & out of homeless shelters and have had difficulty in believing that my life mattered much. Today I am starting over – I’m currently employed and hope to have a place of my own soon. God is so good!” — Tommy Payne

“The Uptown Alliance training has helped me realize that you should never give up. Never stop trying. You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it. So, don’t ever give up!” — Tiara Edmund

“The Uptown Alliance Jobs In Community Training Program, was a ‘starting over point' for me. After five years on dialysis, and a kidney transplant in May 2005, I had to once again get back into the workforce. This program was very informative and inspirational on so many levels. It has provided me with a second chance.” — Terry Royston
